Youth Protection Training (YPT)

Policy

The national office of the Boy Scouts of America has recently increased
one of its standards regarding adult training.

The BSA is now asking ALL adults in scouting––NOT just those who are
formally-registered adult volunteers––to take "Youth Protection
Training" (YPT). So, we want every parent in our troop to take this
valuable training.

YPT is a course designed to teach standardized policies and procedures
for the prevention of child abuse.

The BSA places the greatest importance on creating the most secure
environment possible for our youth members. YPT covers the BSA's
policies around adult supervision of youth, kinds of abuse, signs of
abuse, how to respond to a disclosure of abuse from a scout, and
proper reporting procedures. It does so by taking you through specific
situations that can arise in the course of scouting, including not only
backcountry activities but also troop meetings. So, this doesn't just
apply to those who go on our backpacks or hikes.

YPT is intended to protect not only youth from the potential of abuse
but also to protect adults from false accusations of abuse, and it offers
some sage advice for just about any situation or organization. So, it is
in the best interest not only of your scout but also you yourself to take
this course.

YPT is required every two years. At least one leader with current YPT
training is required any time we meet or go on an outing. So, you can
see how important YPT is to our troop.

While YPT is sometimes offered as a live class at the Council offices,
YPT online can be completed anytime and in as little as 30 minutes, so
it is quite convenient.

Instructions For Online YPT Training

The easiest and quickest way to take or renew your YPT training is by
going online. Here's how, in just 5 steps:

1. Enter the following address in your web browser: myscouting.org.

2. If you have not already done so, create an account by generating a
username and a password.

2b. Only if you are a registered adult volunteer, please add your BSA
member ID to your profile so that course credit will be updated in your
record with our council. The "View Full Profile" tab is in the upper right
corner of the page. Click on the tab. (If you do not know your BSA
member ID, you can find it on your annual BSA membership card or
can request it from our Advancement Chair, Jim De Santis.) Enter your
BSA member ID and tab down to "San Gabriel Valley Council -
Pasadena, CA - #040." Then click the "Add" button. Then click the
"Save Profile" button.

3. In the left margin, click on "E-Learning," and then select "Youth
Protection Training" from the "General" tab.

4. Take the course. YPT online will only take about 30-45 minutes.

5. You will receive a certificate of completion. Print out this certificate,
bring it to the next troop meeting, and give it to our troop
Advancement Chair, Jim De Santis. We ask that you communicate with
us that you have completed the course because
we need to know that
you are trained
.

Other Recommended Online Training

There is a prescribed series of trainings required of each registered
adult volunteer in scouting to be fully trained. Please see our page on
this website for the full sequence of adult leader training.

Other available courses we would like all parents in our troop to
consider taking while you are online, in order of importance, are:

Weather Hazards, Trek Safely, Climb on Safely, Fast Start: Boy
Scouting, This Is Scouting, Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, and
Troop Committee Challenge

Please help support the fine work of your son's troop adult volunteer
leaders by taking Youth Protection Training yourself today. And thank
you for your participation in scouting!
